Adam Torres was a police officer with the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia. In 2013, Torres fatally shot an unarmed man named John Geer during a standoff at Geer's home. Torres claimed that he shot Geer because he was reaching for a gun, but no weapon was found on Geer's person.
Torres was charged with second-degree murder in 2015 and ultimately pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in 2016. He was sentenced to one year in prison, but he was released early on good behavior.
The shooting of John Geer sparked controversy and criticism of the Fairfax County Police Department's handling of the case. The incident led to reforms in how the department deals with officer-involved shootings and increased transparency in such cases.
Torres' actions and the subsequent legal proceedings brought attention to issues of police accountability and use of force in law enforcement.
